clive jeremiah landry | 40s | male | 6'4

somewhere deep in the woods off of a county road outside of jasper, texas is a decrepit farmhouse. once a quaint home, it has deteriorated over the years and fallen into disrepair. here lives clive landry, a mysterious and reclusive security officer working nights at the TXOIL refinery.

personality

on the outside, clive is cold and quiet, never expressing much emotion or talking extensively. he doesn't like any kind of conversation, and prefers to keep to himself to an unhealthy degree. though he's distant and often times aloof, he is very meticulous and preforms well at his job, his coworkers recognizing him as serious and professional.

despite this seemingly calm exterior, clive is extremely shy and neurotic with a very child-like nature. under the surface, he struggles with untreated psychosis and the fallout of his tumultuous upbringing. clive is a devout pentecostal christian, and most of his delusions revolve around his beliefs of 'good' and 'evil'. he's terrified of demons and goes to great lengths to protect himself and his home from anything that could be considered unholy.

clive lives in his own fantasy, tucked far away from the outside world in his rural home. he collects stuffed animals and other toys that often speak to him, with some acting as friends and others taking a more antagonistic role. he is frequently terrorized by his caterpillar 'clarence', who often goads him into vicious self-harm as religious punishment as a result of his repressed homosexualilty.

over the last few years, his psychosis has quickly begun to spin out of control and his life has started to unravel around him even further.

background

clive was born to a somewhat poor family 5 years after the birth of his older sister, joan. his father, calvin 'cal' landry, would find success in preaching and built a strong local revival community. he would often travel with his family throughout east texas to put on large tent revivals that were often broadcast on local radio stations.

often sick as a boy, clive struggled immensely and was homeschooled along with his sister, both as a result of his poor health and cal's fundamentalist beliefs. both he and joan were alone, being raised away from other children deep in rural east texas. his shyness, sickliness and sensitive nature created a poor relationship between his father and himself from a young age.

an extreme alcoholic, cal would often beat and verbally abuse clive and his sister, worsening his shyness and making him extremely neurotic. clive's only solace was his sister and his mother, iris, who would often dote on him and teach him whatever she could. clive still sews as a result of his close relationship with his mother and sister, mending his own clothes and stuffed animals on his time off.

when clive was still a boy, iris died a very slow and painful death from a mysterious illness. her death would be the catalyst for the tragic and violent events that would follow soon after, with cal spiraling completely out of control. the revivals continued, but life at home became unbearable for joan and clive as his drinking intensified. fed up, joan would run away shortly after her 16th birthday.

clive would never see her again, her body being discovered a year later in the brazoria national wildlife refuge. she had been beaten beyond recognition, with strangulation being ruled as the cause of death. her murderer would never be found, sending cal even further off the deep end.

several years later, when clive was around 17, a mysterious fire broke out while him and his father were setting up the tent for a revival they were holding in livingston. firefighters were unable to get there before the tent completely collapsed, tragically killing cal. clive survived, but his face and back were badly burned and are still scarred now.

cal's death would shake the community, and a long-time family friend would take pity on clive. he offered him a job as a security guard in his oil refinery, ensuring the boy was able to stay in the farmhouse that he inherited from his father.

now

not much has changed in the last 30-something years. clive lives alone in his family's home and still works at the refinery, having slowly worked his way into a leadership position. the night shift is quiet and slow, and he doesn't have to worry about interacting with anyone.

his quiet life has been suddenly up-ended when he discovers something terrible on the outskirts of his property. this, along with a chance encounter with an unpleasant man sparks a chain reaction of explosive violence that will mark the end for both of them.
